Megan McGlynn is a mixed media abstract artist living and working just outside Washington, D.C.
Growing up in Europe until the age of 8, thanks to her father’s career as an Army officer, Megan’s appreciation for art began at an early age. Her family spent weekends exploring German castles and summer weeks touring museums and cathedrals filled with classical art throughout Western Europe. Her earliest memory of appreciating art was staring at Michelangelo’s statue of David in Florence. As she stood in the gallery gazing up at the nude figure, her grandmother leaned down and whispered, “Nice tush!” in her ear. It was shocking and hilarious; and for the first time, she realized art can spark a reaction.
Megan is an internationally published wedding cake designer (Martha Stewart Weddings Online, Cake Magazine, and numerous blogs). Baking brought her back to painting, which she dabbled in over the years. While creating a floral buttercream painted cake, it ignited the need in her soul to paint.
Her first career was in nonprofit event management for a seafarers’ organization in Florida. Serving the men and women coming into the port off of cargo and cruise ships opened her eyes to the difficulties of life at sea and the impact of industry on our oceans. Megan’s current work, Tides of Tomorrow, is inspired by her meditations around our symbiotic relationship with the oceans. It is her hope that these pieces will remind the observer of their connection to the earth and humanity, encouraging mindful behaviors to be good stewards to both.
Painting is a physical process. Megan enjoys the kinetic experience of creating a painting. It’s a spontaneous dance, never knowing where the paint will flow. Often wanting control over her situation, this process forces her to accept the moment, be present, and be willing to go where the paint leads her.
